Here are dosage guidelines from my colleague Dr. Ken Stoller.
Oxytocin dosing
At this time, there are not a lot of dosing studies in the medical literature, especially not for the more cutting-edge applications of oxytocin. But it is notable that for the purpose of helping breastfeeding, the dose of 100 IU (taken as a sublingual tablet) was only slightly more effective than the lower dose of 10 IU.
As outlined above, the oxytocin that a regular pharmacy would order comes in vials of 10 IU per ml and each vial is 10 ml. That said, 1 ml of that vial turned into nasal drops would be a safe starting place for any condition.
When I was using oxytocin to help navigate my grief, I used 40 to 50 IU/ml compounded as a nasal spray, and most nasal pumps typically put out 0.1 ml per squirt, so each squirt may be 5 IU maximum. There are only so many oxytocin receptors in the brain and, while they only stay saturated for a finite period of time, I would not use oxytocin more than four times a day for most indications.
Oxytocin is not physiologically addicting, but it can be psychologically addicting. With that understanding, know that using oxytocin more than four times a day will only make the pharmacy happier—but not necessarily you.
Consulting with Dr. Stoller
As stated in the introduction, my primary intention in writing this booklet is to empower those who need oxytocin with information and resources that will help them to obtain a prescription if needed. In discussing oxytocin with your physician or nurse practitioner, you can also use this booklet as a reference guide, to answer questions that might arise if they aren’t already familiar with its expanded uses.
If you need additional support and wish to contact me directly, the following two categories describe my availability:
For patients in New Mexico and California
I am available for in-person consultations and tele-medicine sessions via Skype and can prescribe oxytocin.
For patients with urgent needs outside of New Mexico and California, I am available to consult with patients (or their families) and to interface with their physicians or other licensed healthcare practitioners. Once a consultation is complete, I provide the necessary letter via fax or email for the healthcare giver who will be prescribing the oxytocin.
