Vit D levels disruption

My husband had optimal Vit D results until his recent test. We walked all summer and took Vit.D. I was wondering if having hernia surgery (or any surgery) can lower the levels or the hernia itself ? He is upping his doseage per the MD but just trying to figure out why it dipped by 20. Thanks!

Yes, surgery is a major trauma to the body, and can markedly increase the body’s need for vitamin D as well as many other nutrients, thus using them up much more rapidly than normal. Hopefully he’s taking a high dose to get his number back up quickly. Typically, it’s wise to retest in 3 months to see if getting to the optimal range of 50-80 ng/dl.

Best!

Thanks so MUCH! This was a guess and so happy to have it confirmed! I have never seen this emphasized in any readings on Vit.D so hopefully this will help get out the word! He is at 42 now and was over 60 before the surgery.

Wow-great that he was so optimal prior to surgery! That means he doesn’t have so far to go. So many patients I see are in the teens or 20s, so 42 is MUCH better than that! Best!
