Congrats on 3 years no smoking! That’s an incredible accomplishment after so many decades! Not sure I understand what your question is exactly, but it sounds like you are now trying to lose weight and found the ketogenic diet didn’t work for you. Typically, a low carbohydrate diet has a very positive effect on weight but needs to be done with health in mind. After 46 years of smoking, your body needs significant support in detoxification, which requires very high amounts of dark-green vegetables and high fiber intake. Some forms of the ketogenic diet don’t emphasize this, and for you it will be particularly important. You can be in ketosis with high “clean” fat (MCT oil, olive oil, avocados, high fat nuts/seeds like macadamia nuts and pecans, and ghee), moderate protein, and low carbohydrate (under 50 g of carbs each day –fiber carbs not counted). Many people eat “dirty” fats on a ketogenic diet such as bacon, grain-fed butter, and other highly inflammatory oils that can backfire for many people, especially when paired with inadequate water, fiber, and too much protein.
For weight loss, and to support detoxification post-smoking, I would focus on having ample detoxifiying green vegetables daily (kale, spinach, broccoli, sprouts, chard, Brussels sprouts, etc.), adequate water, healthy fats at every meal/snack, and adequate protein while avoiding all sugars, white flours/starches, artificial sweeteners, non-organic poultry/seafood, and processed foods in general. This, in combination with regular movement, will have the nice side effect of weight loss while having the primary effect of optimizing health overall.
Let me know if I didn’t answer your question!
Best!
