I was taken off 300mg of lithium which I was taking nightly because of thyroid problems. My doctor is Seeing if this is the problem. One night so far I had trouble sleeping without the lithium. I’ve heard Tana say that she takes higher than recommended doses of magnesium. I am trying 600 mg daily Chelated magnesium glycinate. Is this safe? I want to take more because I think it calms me but am a little worried because the recommended daily dose is 300 to 400 mg for women. I want to know what you think , please. I also have the 50mg  of magnesium  in the neurovite plus I take daily.

yes it is safe my husband and myself have been on 750 mg as a dose.   However, if you take too much magnesium orally it can give you diarrhea.  should only take what you can tolerate at a time.  As time goes on and you build up more magnesium in your body, your need may go down.  If you need a higher dose of magnesium and can not tolerate it. you could try an epsom salt bath or magnesium gel where you absorb magnesium through the skin.  this give you and instant effect of a good dose.

Magnesium is generally very safe, and non-toxic even at higher doses. There are many forms of magnesium, and some are less likely to cause loose stools as a side effect, such as glycinate. If you do experience loose stools, it is simply an indicator that you have reached too high of a dose, and you can cut back until your symptoms resolve. Best!

Thank you so much Zoe. I do want to take magnesium but was a little worried. I have another question. I am off lithium because of my thyriod. I was wondering if you know if hrt replacement therapy can hurt your thyroid. I’m 59 years old . In menopause and have been taking .3 mg of premarin( I think that’s what it is I’m not home) and 2.5 mg of provera for 6 months. I take Premarin day 1 thru 25 and provera 15 thru the 25 th day. 5 days both off. I healed my thyroid   Around 6 months ago just changing  diet. My doctor also had waited, that time, to see if my thyroid would return to normal.      This time he took me off lithium 300mg and is going to see what happens in 2 months. I was tried on synthroid 25 mcg by my other doctor can’t take it. Drives me over the edge. So my psychiatrist is giving me two months again , his idea ,  to see if it’ the lithium. He’s very intuitive.. I don’t know if it’s the stress my other doctor mentioned cortisol and norephrenefrin, (don’t know how  spell it ) the lithium, timing of eating , too much of certain foods that I found out can also affect your thyroid, or hrt , or a combination or all of the above. I want to know if you think hrt can affect your thyroid ? I know my psychiatrist will figure it out. It’s juat a little hard since I usually have a lot of energy . Thank you for being so patient. I made a lot of mistakes in my writing . I reread it and couldn’t  believe you actually could understand what I wrote. Thanks for all your help today and  in the past you are very very nice and smart.

I forgot to say. My estrogen was just about zero before I started HRT. It’s still extremely low  after 6 months of HRt almost undetectable. I really don’t want to take a higher dose of hrt
because of the risks. I actually  lost around 10lbs on Hrt the first 3 weeks. Haven’t gained it back . Just wanted to explain. I dont really want to go off hrt if I don’t have to. Plus I have a slight case osteopenia .another reason I don’t want to go off it.

Excuse me for not writing all at once I keep forgetting things I’m on Cytomel 5mcg. Have been  on it for quite a while.  It  Doesn’t have a negative affect on me . It has only given me alot of energy in the past.

You’re very welcome! Very happy to help where I can! HRT can impact thyroid replacement needs for those with hypothyroidism, so talk to your doctor about what may be best for you moving forward.

Synthroid is a synthetic version of T4, but Armour Thyroid (natural thyroid gland) has both T3 and T4. I would encourage a conversation with your physician about what is best for you based on your health history, or consider making an appointment to speak with one of our functional medicine practitioners to get a more comprehensive assessment. -Coach Zoe

Thank you so much . I will mention Armor Thyroid next time I see my doctors. If my thyroid doesn’t get better in two months that may be a good option.
