Sweating Too Much on the Face

Hi,

I tend to sweat a lot over the whole body, but the face is the place where I sweat the most. It gets worse when I’m anxious or self-conscious that I’ll or I’m sweating.

I take L-Theanine and Gaba that reduces the problem, but my antidepressant increases sweat too. I’m thinking about talking to my doctor and ask to give it a try to Gabapentine.

I would like to know the possible causes and what interventions are available that stop the sweat. It doesn’t hurt physically, but the shame is painful because I can’t stop sweating and get frustrated in social situations.

Thanks,
Dannilo.

Hi Dannilo,

Thanks so much for your post and for sharing. Excess sweating can sometimes be linked to an underlying medical condition such as diabetes, but it is commonly an indication of adrenal fatigue (common with chronic stress/anxiety) and a need for liver detoxification support. Sweating is one of the ways the body detoxifies through the skin, but another primary detox organ is the liver. You can support it by making sure you are getting adequate protein, ample water, and plenty of dark greens (daily!). You can also get a greens supplement if you don’t like to eat them often enough. Broccoli sprouts are one of the best greens you can eat, so add them to meals whenever possible. And while there are supplements that support adrenal fatigue, stress management and good sleep hygiene are absolutely key.

If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to consider getting support for stress and anxiety through counseling or group therapy. And if you have to continue on medications that cause excess sweating, acupuncture may be a modality to consider for lessening your symptoms.

I hope that helps, Dannilo!

Zoe

Oh Dannilofranco I feel your pain!!  It’s probably from a different cause but my sweating from the head and face has been terrible for years.  Even admitted myself to the ER at one point to get checked for heart problems.  At the time I was overmedicated for hypothyroid, meaning I was given a T3 supplement on top of the Levothyroxine that was causing real problems.  However, that’s long been corrected and I continue to have issues – except now they are exacerbated by menopausal hot flashes (hello from Florida btw).  I’ve started taking Estroven but not sure if it will help.

And I noticed I was sweating today when trying to get something that had lodged underneath the couch.  Not related to a hot flash, and only 80 degrees in the house.  So I’m going to start paying more attention to what precedes it.   If it’s not from a hot flash, was I bending over?  With exertion, such as lifting up the couch on one end to pull it out?  Can the action and conditions and the sweating be replicated to prove that one action causes the other? Frequency?  Regularity?  Intensity when/where/how much? Have I just eaten something that could trigger it (such as super-hot sauce with capsacin?)

Have another vascular workup scheduled in October and am hoping to have some solid clues to present to the doctor.

So far the only real and repeatable triggers are anxiety, anger, and hot flashes.  It does seem to be related to anything that causes a slight rise in adrenaline, cortisol etc. Even the hot flashes seem related to that. And, not the same issue as you, but menopause causes heat intolerance which makes everything worse.

It does seem that bending down causes it sometimes but I’ll test that.

Likely different from what you’re experiencing, but the hot flashes suck! Made the sweating issue worse when started about 2 years ago. They start at the bottom of my feet and suddenly my entire face, and neck will be bright red, on fire and dripping sweating like I had run a marathon, with my hair soaked also, and people will literally hand me a towel.  It’s horribly embarrassing.  Happened in the car dealership the other day while I was meeting with the salesman and I could not get out of the building in time.  Borrowed the fan at the front desk (it was 95 degrees outside so that wasn’t a solution) and it took five minutes for it to abate. I can not do anything but stand there and let a fan blow the heat off my skin.  But, as the Geico ads used to say, I have good news:  The freezer looks great inside since i defrost it so often now.  Ice, glorious ice.

Best of luck to you. Please update if you are able to isolate the cause.
