Sensitivity to Supplements and Caffeine

I have Brain Type 8. I am also very sensitive to supplements / caffeine (including tea)

What would be some likely causes of sensitivity to supplements? I have noticed that I get anxious and jittery with coffee, tea, and majority of the supplements that I’ve tried. Do you think it maybe a ‘leaky gut’ or an overactive Basal Ganglia?

So in the mornings I have no energy and feel very lethargic, and I can get going only after a cup of tea. I can tolerate one cup of tea but cannot tolerate coffee. However as the day progresses and my energy and focus levels dip, I feel the need to have a second cup of tea, but this in turn causes me to become anxious. Most of the supplements that I have tried to avoid the need for caffeine, also have the same effect.
So its a very vicious cycle and very very frustrating. I see a supplement that I feel may help me and it raises my hopes for a solution to my predicament, and upon trying it, makes me feel worse. (It happened with Neurolink). I am now afraid to try Serotonin Mood Support, which is on of the recommended supplements for Brain Type 8.

So If I avoid tea / supplements, I have brain fog and feel very sluggish, which obviously affects my performance, and if I have them I start to feel anxious and panicky. What a predicament!

Docamen did suggest to try BBPMax and I’m waiting for it to be shipped. Are there any other steps that I can take to try and circumvent the situation I am in? I have gone gluten free and am also trying to cut out diary too. I want to cut out caffeine too, but then I feel enervated and ‘foggy’ all day and have no motivation at all.
Maybe a probiotic?

Looking to all the experts on this forum for guidance. Please Help!

Whether you are particularly sensitive or not, some supplements require you to adjust to them, so starting with lower doses than recommended, and slowly increasing can be helpful for some. I would suggest making sure you are getting adequate water throughout the day for energy, and make sure you are not getting any artificial sweeteners or additives in your foods as much as possible, as these can exacerbate anxiety for some.

To lessen caffeine, try slowly tapering down so that you don’t feel as sluggish. Using adequate water in place of caffeine can be just as energizing, and much healthier. You might add fresh ginger or mint to your water for a more refreshing, uplifting beverage when you start to feel withdrawal from caffeine.

Probiotics are very important, so I think we can all benefit from them. Keep up with the specific recommendations for you on your report, paying particular attention to nutrition, sleep, water, exercise, and relaxation exercises. These are the foundation of a good body/brain health program. Best to you!

I would also consider Focus and Energy to replace the caffeine.

I am also highly sensitive to all supplements and also have brain type 8. I get intensive brain tinnitus and roaring ringing headaches from even tiny sprinkles of supplements (all of them) I used to love and take. I feel hopeless w/out them. Suffering with ptsd, also gets triggered by reactivity to supplements I used to use for body and brain. I feel absolutely devastated. Doc Amen, how do I heal the brain tinnitus reactivity to supplements? I have had SPECT scan here in Wash/VA clinic, it matched the assessment from here exactly. Please help – how can I heal brain tinnitus and reactivity to all supplements – Need vitD, omega3s, proBs. GABA/inosotol, B-12 and the list goes on. I am a holistic gal and love and miss the help and relief I used to get from my supps. Can no longer and have nothing to calm or support. And no good sleep. Help! and many, many thanks for all.

ps. I have done HBOT and neurofeedback, which I love, but the neurofeedback is temporary and based on continual therapy, which I could barely afford at the time and can no longer afford today. The NF helped to sleep and the anxiety. Short term. But nothing helps or improves on the ringing/vibrating brain tinnitus. Any hope for this? Thank you!!

For tinnitus, here are some things my patients have said are helpful:

Acupuncture.
rTMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation)
Ginkgo
B12 if low
Omega 3s (decrease inflammation)
White noise

on August 1, 2016

I’ve done TMS. and acupuncture, but not for awhile. as I am trying to get help with, I am unable to take any supplements. here is my problem which I wrote about.
I used to take and get so much help from them. But no longer can due to acute tinnitus reactivity. So I can no longer take gingko, Omega3s etc. as they are supplements!
Yes, to the person who started this post, I am hsp (the new scientific term is actually SPS now, for sensory perception sensitivity) and we have special and more intuitive-and energy-sensitive brains.
Thank you Dr. Amen, but I don’t think you heard me: I cannot take suppements and this is very stressful for me. But yes, I can continue to try to work with acupuncture. Thank you.
I have also done TMS. It does not touch the tinnitus. But can be good for people for depression. tx.

For tinnitus you can try Tunning Forks / Sound Healing. The OHM fork works for myself and helps a lot.
And blue noise too.

zia909, There usually is much you can do for tinnitus since it is usually nerve damage. Sometimes it can be from a negative reaction to a medication, food, noise. I have had sever tinnitus for 25 yrs. I have found no relief with everything stated above.

What about using GABA Calming support for Sensitive people? In his book, Reclaim your Brain, Dr.Joseph Annibali has a specific section for HSP’s (Highly Sensitive People) and mentions calming nutritional supplements such as GABA, L-Theanine, Lemon Balm, Magnesium etc, all of which are ingredients in BrainMD’s GABA Calming Support.

hi mjohn82. I am high sensory hsp as well. for some of us, we can take sprinkles, or what some call “fairy dusting” of supps. Just put a little on a spoon or plate, dip your finger tip in, literally, just wet your finger tip with your tongue and take a little dab on your fingertip, put it onto your tongue and let it soak in. That will be your dose. and yes, all of the supps you mentioned can help. but.. if you are like me, even that will cause a severe reaction. I got severe traumatic neurologic injury from a prescription medication I took for graves disease/thyroid storms. when I got off I developed severe brain tinnitus, and it has not healed in over 10 years, and since then, I cannot even tolerate tiny tiny doses of any supplement. it makes me nuts. I guess most people cannot understand. which is also hard for empaths, as we constitutionally and emotionally and spiritually understand everything, and everyone. Because we can go into oneness with it, and feel it all. We are great healers. But we need healing help too. sigh…

I do want to add to Dr. Amen that I am grateful for his work and these forums and website is just wonderful. Thank you for your best answer to my question. I will keep trying. But thanks.

Hi amz909,

So is there something that you take or do that helps you to some extent? Anything that helps alleviate some of the symptoms? What flower essences do you find helpful?

Also you mentioned that you used to take supplements before? What were they and were these for Brain Type 8?

Have you tried ayurveda for Tinnitus?

Take care

Hi John. You can go online or to a WholeFoods store and look up Bach Flower remedies. They list the remedies with detailed emotional profiles that each of the remedies address. You can choose one or several, and take several drops in a glass of water at regular intervals during the day. Their literature and website should also give directions. I also find epsome salt baths helpful, and mostly, honestly, going out into nature. Just sitting outside calms my sensitive system. Sunshine is the best. Even for 20 mins or more a day when possible. But just being outdoors, even just sitting, is such a relief and reset for my highly sensitive system. Also, read about HSP (highly sensitive person) online. So much is addressed in this knowledge of our special and gifted highly sensitive brains.

Currently for tinnitus I am working with a cranial sacral practioner. It is like energy work for the brain and brain/neurologic system. I love it. And it really helps calm me down. That and focusing on mindful meditaiton and regular periods where I just rest and take breaks. No more pushing through life. I am learning to understand and care for my highly sensitive brain.

Much love and luck to you. But try the Bach remedies, or other homeopathics that you can have personally chosen by a homeopathist. I love those too.

I am trying to combine an ayurvedic diet with guidelines for burned-out adrenals and some chronic health stuff. Trying to keep it simple in this world of complexity and calming the overwhelm. Thanks John!
Take care too!!

As awful as it sounds, I am glad to hear of others having negitive reactions to suppliments. I don’t know about you all, but my doctor(s) look at me like Im nuts. I also am very reactive to most types of medications.
Personally, I get extremely ill when I take suppliments or Rx medications regardless of the time of day or what is in my stomach. Like those of you above, supplements that are supposed to calm, make me extremly jittery to the point I can not function. I am super reactive to any form of ,ACE inhibitors which makes life pretty difficult since I have autoimmune issues this type of drug is used to treat.
I have spent countless fortunes on attempts to use suppliments, which end up in the trash and simply cannot do it any more. My brain type is 13, Lucky girl, huh? LOL.
In addition to this I am allergic to my world. All types of trees and grasses, molds, dust, etc…. as well as foods such as shell fish, lettuce, onions, garlic, (try eating without onions and garlic!!!) grapes, bananas, tuna, chichen, casein in milk. My inhailer and disk I am supposed to use  twice daily and for allergic  reactions makes me visably shake inside and out and will last for hours! Likewise, I am  very reactive to gulten and all forms of alcohol. .I blow up within mintues.
My research has led me to “leaky gut” which doctors, of course, deny exsistance of. I have tried the bone broth diet to some degree. Beef Broth makes me desperately ill ( and I know the butcher personally. The bones are from grass fed cows.) I CAN handle chicken broth in moderation although they say I am allergic to chicken. I am not what is consider overweight but I am not where I want to be nor am I healthy.
Suggestions from one and all are more than welcomed.

Sounds like you have been very proactive in trying to remove many triggers for your body, which is not easy to do, and with so many things you seem to be reactive or sensitive to, looking to your gut health is a wise path. While there are skeptics, many doctors also validate the existence of intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”), and there are many ways to rebuild both your intestinal walls and your cellular walls through nutritional interventions, supplements, exercise, and stress management. Over time, some people can become less reactive to certain foods once their gut health is restored, so it may be well worth it. If you don’t have one already, I would suggest having a consult with one of our integrative physicians or nutrition counselors for additional support. Best to you! – Coach Zoe

Hi Sasse, I know exactly what you mean by it is a relief to know you are not the only one. and I am finding it amazing how many people are actually dealing with this too, cannot take supplements or even sprinkles, and so many food sensitivities, many of us having a hard time eating so many things, it is overwhelming. We just have to stick to what our sensitive bodies can do and that is different for each of us. and keep trusting our own body and it’s messages and listening from there. But truly, I am finding it amazing because on so many sites and groups today online we can see that there are SO many of us going through this. We are truly not alone. And for me that feels like, ok, maybe there is another path for us. And I believe there is.

You have done well to note what you are reacting to and what is safe for you. So that is the best beginning. If we keep following/listening to our particular sensitive bodies and brains we will be led to our own path naturally I think. But it is so hard and challenging too. I get it. So support and sharing is so helpful. Thanks for sharing.

I shared a few things that are helping me now under the previous post by Mjohn82. These include massage and cranial sacral, sitting outdoors in nature, and taking epsome salt baths. I hope some of that may help you too. I am dealing with complex chronic issues and food sensitivities too. At one point bone broth seemed to be helping me, then at others it was a trigger for neuro-inflammation. And there are differing protocols from different nutritionists, <M Many say that bone broth is good for leaky gut, but not if you are having histamine reactivity. If you are reacting to histamine, which with allergies and et al it can be likely, then we have to stay away from it and anything that is even one day old or aged. It is so overwhelming. But I like broths in general. Maybe I have to make smaller batches and just eat them fresh, not after they have been in the fridge for over a day. I think like you are doing just following your own body’s messages is best, along with learning about our conditions and connecting with others and using our god-given intuition and inner guidance to follow what to do next and what feels best for us as individual bodies. But I think this sharing and support and knowing we are in this not alone is also key. Thanks for sharing too. best wishes.
