Scary

I have written about my husband before. He is in a nursing home unable to hardly move, only can say a few words, and is on a puréed diet. He is 152 lbs. and around 5’10”. On my visiting days I try to feed him a lot, so he will at least maintain his weight. Well last night he wouldn’t eat for me for the 1st time. I asked the nurse, “do you think he had a stroke?” She finally figured no. Then I asked , Do you think his stomach is upset?” She said she’d check if he had w bowel movement.he did. Rather than have him starve I decided to try juice. Well he gussled down 3 cups of juice and one stevia soda. Surprisingly he started to eat after that and slot. Horrifying. Just thirsty. I am going to talk to the head nurse tomorrow for the 2nd time about making sure he gets liquids throughout the day. I drink smoothies, green tea, herbal teas, and much liquid throughout the day, I can’t imagine not being able to tell someone your thirsty or being just able to grab something to drink when you want. What about the patients at nursing homes that have no one visiting them, which is most, and can’t say their thirsty. . I never want to get myself in this situation. This is one of my many reasons to be s brain warrior.

Hello-  I went through much the same with my Dad 9 years ago and I am sorry to hear this.  In my State they have Dept. of Elderly affairs who has a representative that will go in and check on this and put them on notice.  It’s helpful when they know someone is checking!   Sad we have to take these steps but I guess that’s the way it is.

The nursing home is real nice. I’m sure they will cooperate . They probably just get busy or give up the 1st time he refuses food.

Wow, this is scary.  Awful to be thirsty and not be able to tell anyone.  Can the nursing home provide a chart where they record (and initial) the times when your husband eats and drinks and how much he consumes?  That way, you could look at the chart when you visit and know how much he’s had.  Also, then they’ll know when no one had given him a drink in a while.  Just a thought … don’t know if this could work.

I’ll see what happens when I call them.

Jenny k  I think that’s a good idea for having them chart the water intake. They do chart the food. The head nurse is in s meeting. I am going to tell to her later this morning. Thanks for the good suggestion.

Jenny K thanks again for your suggestion . The nursing home told me they only monitor foods, but they did say they’ told all the nurses to give my husband liquids throughout the day.
