Question about Telomere Testing and Heart Rate Variability Device

Hi Zoe,
On a recent podcast I heard Daniel speak about getting telomere testing done for himself and wondered if you could find out what company he used as there are a few choices and I would prefer to go with the company he had selected for himself, as he has better knowledge of this than I do.

Also, on an earlier podcast Tana spoke of using a heart rate variability monitor and I wondered if you could find out which one she uses as I would also prefer to use the one she has used if she is happy with it.

Thanks very much for looking into this.

Have a great day!
Janet

Hi Zoe,
Thanks very much for this information.
On another note, I wanted to mention something that Daniel and Tana may want to be aware of. I have a tendency towards thin blood (though I am not on a blood thinner) and have had eye hemorrhages on occasion in the past, especially after taking gingko biloba years ago. I hadn’t had an eye hemorrhage in a few years but ended up having another one earlier this week. I believe these few things that I had done recently seemed to thin my blood too much: increased my fish oil from 1 capsule per day to 2 per day, started using grated ginger and cayenne pepper in my morning warm lemon water (I had gotten this idea from Tana), started drinking Macha tea 1x/day and taking reishi mushroom extract 1x/day. I am not sure if the last two things thinned my blood, but I’m pretty sure the first few things I mentioned did. I would never be able to take some of the supplements that BrainMD has due to the blood thinning potential of some of these supplements. I am not sure if Daniel and Tana are aware of this, though I would appreciate if you would let them know of my experience and let me know what they recommend that I do to optimize brain health while keeping my blood from getting too thin.
Thanks very much!
Janet

Hi Zoe,
I am following up on my last message from Oct 21 re: my issue with too much blood thinning from some of the supplements and health products I was taking. I would love to hear Daniel and Tana’s feedback on this, as well as your feedback, regarding how to increase blood flow to the brain by supplementing with fish oil and other brain supportive supplements without thinning the blood too much. I am currently taking 1 fish oil per day and would like to increase it to 2/day but have concern about doing this. Can you also let me know what exact test Amen Clinic uses to test Omega 3 fatty acids in your blood and where to get this in the event my usual lab does not do this test? I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks Zoe! All my best, Janet
PS: I enjoyed hearing you and the other panel members on the recent Memory Rescue webinar! 🙂

I am sorry about my missing this post! I will be sure to pass your question along to them. When you began having eye hemorrhaging what did your physician say about the cause? If you haven’t gotten to the bottom of that symptom, you might consider having a consult with one of our integrative physicians to try to gain a more comprehensive understanding about your thinning blood from otherwise healthy foods and supplements. In the meantime, perhaps concentrating on food sources for omega 3 would be a better idea for you instead of supplements until the cause of your thinning blood can be determined. The fatty acid blood analysis is called OmegaQuant, and can be purchased online. Best to you! And thanks for watching the webinar! 🙂

Hi Zoe,
Thanks for your message. When I had the worst of the eye hemorrhages about 5 years ago (in the colored part of my eye) the eye doctor attributed it to taking gingko biloba for many months and then having 1 baby aspirin the night before that, which is what pushed it over the edge. I believe the underlying reason I have thinner blood is that I am a vegetarian and I eat a great deal of greens and other vegetables. I read that this can have a blood thinning effect. I have generally been very cautious about using any supplements that thin the blood after that first eye episode. When I loosened up a bit in the past few months after listening to information from Tana and Daniel (e.g., taking 2 fish oils/day instead of 1/day and putting ginger and cayenne in my lemon water) as well as drinking 1 cup of matcha tea/day, I got another hemorrhage, which I hadn’t had in a couple years, though thankfully it was not quite as bad and resolved in a few days. Given I am vegetarian (mostly vegan), I don’t eat foods that may be a good source of omega 3s (e.g., salmon). Can you recommend a brand of vegetarian/vegan source of omega 3s, from an algae based source? I would want to use a good brand that is completely clean of contaminants, of course. Let me know if you think that might also thin my blood, similar to the fish oil. Thanks for the name of the fatty acid blood test, too! 🙂

Vegetarian/Vegan omega-3 fatty acid supplements struggle to have the optimal amount of total omega3 fatty acids, and the balance the ratio of EPA to DHA, but a couple of good quality brands to consider include Pure Encapsulations and Nordic Naturals, both of which have algae supplements containing omega-3s.

Nutritionally, I would also include flax meal and walnuts regularly in your diet, as these can provide ALA, another omega 3 fatty acid, which can be converted into DHA and EPA, though this conversion is not highly efficient. Make sure to avoid all trans fats that can inhibit this conversion (I bet you are already doing that!) and keep up with a multivitamin as B-vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and zinc can all help the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA in the body. Best!

Thanks very much for your message, Zoe. And, yes, you are right…I do avoid all trans fats and have for decades. 🙂
One other question: do you recommend doing a thyroid blood test with having taken my thyroid medication in the morning before the test or not taking it that morning? Do you know if Daniel and Tana have the same recommendation for this? I have been told both ways, but my PCP and endocrinologist have suggested I should take the medication in the morning before the blood test. Not sure if this gives an accurate reading or not and would appreciate your feedback.

Our physicians recommend staying on your medication prior to the test. – Coach Zoe
