Negative thoughts interrupt my sleep just before awakening

For over 16 years I have managed to maintain a positive attitude throughout each day. Just like a light switch, I can turn off most unhealthy thoughts in an instant. When I go to bed, I’m usually asleep within 2-5 minutes. (This took years of practice too). My problem is I usually have to go to the restroom, (as happens with so many of us 60+ guys), anytime between 2:30-4:30AM. When I get back in bed, my thoughts are suddenly occupied with negative thoughts, no matter how hard I try to turn them off, and they stick with me until I eventually fall asleep, or get up and go work in my studio. Any ideas why I’m bombarded with the negativity?

I also have a problem with quieting my brain. I am now doing meditation and listen to soft nature sounds. Then I focus on the sounds and not what I’m trying to not think about. Plan for this by having your music or mediation available by your bedside. Sweet dreams.

I put some suggestions on  your other post. I have experienced this throughout my life and have found several remedies. I meditate now and am doing the Brainfit program. I am not experiencing this right now although I am in a challenging situation. The key I think is to sleep longer in whatever way works for you. Please see my other post.

Thanks. I’ve developed the ability to take 15 minute power naps throughout the day, to compensate from the lack of sleep.

I’d develop a strategy ahead of time.  When you get up, turn on the hypnosis audios or brain enhancing music.  Start a positive mantra. It sounds like the negativity is like bad habit in the brain.

Thanks! I find it odd that I can maintain a positive attitude during the day, but for that brief time, early in the morning, my mind allows negativity to slip in. I wonder why not thoughts of happy things, instead of the negative? The great thing is that, when I awaken, typically at 4:45, I regain total control, and can immediately turn off all negativity.
