Better Together

Multivitamin

Hey I got labs done and I was high in b12. Other vitamins and minerals were normal range and some lower like vit D was 35 and folate was 3.4. After that I was taking brain and body and felt better and then had adverse effects. I figured it had to be me adding more b12, which is supposed to be water soluble but now I’m not so sure. The effects were effects of toxicity. Electrolytes went totally out of control, headaches, BP fluctuations and more. So I’m trying to see what good recommendations you could give me for getting around the b12 thing. Reason being there were a lot of good things my body needed in the multivitamin and there is a really good balance in the regimen and doing things one by one is a difficult process. Certain vitamins having to be taken together and some vitamins affecting others and maintaining that balance is a lot. Just wondering what the best course of action would be.

B-12 is indeed water soluble but is also the one B vitamin that is stored for some time (several years) in the liver so deficiency symptoms can sometimes take a long time to appear. There is no known toxicity from excess intake as general absorption levels tend to be low, and therefore no ‘upper limit’ has been set. That said, you obviously are having significant symptoms so I strongly encourage you to talk to your physician about any underlying medical issues or interactions the ingredients in this multivitamin may have with any medications you are taking.

If no contraindication is found, you might cut back to 1 capsule per day instead of 4 and slowly work your way up from there. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water as well (about 1/2 your body weight in ounces per day, up to 100 oz). Since every body is different, we have to understand your unique needs based on health history, current medications, nutrition intake, activity level, etc. to know what supplements can benefit you most.

I hope that helps!

I really appreciate the response! Yes, seems something was throwing my electrolytes way off. I tried to track it down and I’m thinking too much calcium from the protein shakes maybe. It’s really hard to tell so I just paused everything for now. I’m in the process of getting more bloodwork done now. I am also taking medication as well. Medication further complexes the issue. Hey how do I get a one on one session?
