Motor Ticks

I am curious in regards to getting feed back about motor ticks. I am currently dealing with an injury and my xray showed that i have some disc degeneration in my neck C5 C6 C7 and this is of course causing my neck to lock up and at times causing refering pain up my skull and down my upper back. I find myself shaking my head a lot to see if the pain is still there which is of course only compounding the issue. I am doing massage, tens unit, acupuncture and Magmind from jarrow formulas (all of which are helping my neck in a huge way). My concerns are the motor ticks and if this is causing any damage to my brain. I remember as a child when i would get a toothache that i would bite down on the tooth just to see if it still hurt. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for your question, bigmike. I’m not sure if I understand exactly what you’re asking, so please clarify with me if I’m off base. It sounds like you had an injury that may have caused some pain that you intentionally try to exacerbate in a way to see if it’s still there, much like your tooth ache example? Is the shaking of your head what you consider a motor tic?

Hi Coach Zoe
Yes that is correct i am looking at the shaking of the head as a motor pic. Am i off base with that assumption?  Thanks

I think if it feels involuntary, and is a violent shaking than we would be concerned about both the consequences of that motion, as well as the reasons underlying your need to move in that way. While there is obviously a physical component at play, there also sounds like some anxiety causing you to “check” the pain level of your neck. You may consider working with a practitioner who is versed in the body-mind dynamic (pain therapist, mindfulness coach, etc.) so that both aspects may be addressed. Let me know if this makes sense. Thanks for reaching out. -Zoe

Hi Zoe
Thank you for the response and feed back. I was wondering if there is someone who you could suggest for me to go to near where i live anywhere on long island? Unless of course, i can do phone consultations with them.  Please let me know your suggestions.  Thank you

We have brain health coaches you can see via video or phone, and there are resources for in person therapists with these specialties at www.goodtherapy.org. Let me know if you need further help finding someone. Best!

I would be very interested talking to someone within the amen clinic. Would I see you or would you suggest someone else? Thank you
