Levels Of Sleep Apnea?

Are there different levels of Sleep Apnea?
I ask this because sometimes when I wake up my sinuses are partially blocked.   I don’t remember ever waking up to total blockage, but periodically there is partial blockage which clears when I sit upright or stand.   Sometimes I snore.   Normally I wake up refreshed.   So I’m not sure.   In order to become sure is taking a sleep test the only option?

Toconrad,
I expeirence the same clear and blocked sinuses,  I feel great going to bed, however, upon, arising, I can have sinus blockages that can create a headache, standing tall, the block ages dissapear and I may have the headache.  I would like to recommend a food diary for you, keep track of your food and alcohol intake,  Mine is alcohol, 98 % of the time.  I had the sleep apnea tests and I am slightly affected by apnes, however, you can obtain a free app SNORElab, that measures the sound of your snoring,  It is neat this combined with a food and alcohol diary can lead to a sinus pain free live, to a large extent.  Also, I take ceterizine, and flonase daily, during my allergy sensitve times,  Also, seeing an allergist can help you too.

Great suggestions! Sinus congestion is largely affected by dairy, sugar, and refined flours, so you could try a few weeks without these and see if it clears. Also make sure you are drinking enough water, and no alcohol. Regular exercise can also help to detoxify and clear waste from your system.

Has anyone said you snore loudly, or do you wake up gasping for air or coughing? In addition to low energy upon waking, those are good indications that you may need a sleep study. I love the SNORElab suggestion too!

Thanks for your responses.   My symptoms (when they occur) are mild.   I normally don’t wake up gasping for air or coughing.   I have snored loudly on occasion.   The point of my question was to avoid labelling this a problem if in fact it is not.   Maybe I should ask my question differently: At what point is it certain that I have a problem?   Can this SNORElab app help me determine this?    Or is a sleep test my only option?

Your question is pretty exact, therefore, I would think seeking out those who have more experience in dealing with multitudes of folks who may have the same question, let me know by keeping me posted.

Hi TC, Glad you posted this!!..yes there are levels of this…  I have a similar issue and  CPap machine but do not use it much given fit, model etc.. I toss and turn a lot and till have low e in the AM .. So still working on it..WIP.. Depending on your situation trying anything else first then going that route might be better overall.. Molded dentist jaw devices can mess with your teeth, bite etc. so not with out issues here.. I do not use the one I have either!!.. If you can find an over counter sports mouth guard type brace or something else ie chin brace to stop your jaw from moving forward so much at night then all the better..  However, I love Zoe’s suggestions here and will try them out too.. I have started lifting wts 3x week and need to do more aerobics for sure.. Hard to get 100% off sugar but going in that direction.. I have the cravings for sugar, salt and crunch and gets me when I am tired, brain dead/fogged and stressed. If I am shopping in this state and Not prepared with appropriate snacks ie almonds etc. I will easily reach for something bad in a heartbeat! I am sure there are lots of trick on this site for this!! .. Please let us know if you find out what works for you and I will do the same…

If you are getting enough hours of sleep, and feel adequately rested, there is probably not a medical issue. You can always speak with your doctor about your concerns, and get her/his opinion on what (if any) tests would be beneficial to you.

Yes, there are different levels of sleep apnea.  I have mild sleep apnea caused by sinus blockage which causes me to breath thru my mouth and when my mouth is dry I wake up.  As coach Zoe questioned if you wake up gasping for breath, this is more severe, so you likely have mild sleep apena and a sleep study will confirm this.  I’ve had a home sleep study and a hospital overnight sleep study, both confirmed I have mild sleep apnea and the treatment is using a cpap.  I tried several weeks using the cpap and it did nothing, because my sinuses at that time had much more blockage.  The treatment for sinus blockage was a nasal rinse before bed, which does little to nothing, because the underlying cause is not treated.

I have greatly cleared up my sinuses by eliminating dairy, sugar and wheat glutin.  Coach Zoe is correct and to go further, the reason these will cause sinus blockage is caused by a leaking gut.  These food molecules get into the blood stream and the body releases histamines to detox them thru the sinuses and lymphatic system.  There certainly is a gut – brain connection that affects sleep.  My leaky gut still has a ways to go to be completely healthy.  Best wishes in your sleep learning, its is 1/4 – 1/3 of our life!

It sounds to me like you have been on a long journey with many ups and downs before arriving at the place you are now.   I am curious as to how you came to the conclusion that food molecules in the blood stream from leaky gut caused the body to release histamines to detox them thru the sinuses and lymphatic system.  This sounds reasonable.  Was it blood tests that confirmed all this?   Or some other type of testing?

Yes its been quite a journey, along with being a brain fit warrior I’m a health detective searching for answers to my own personal health.  I did have a blood test from a naturopath doctor using Alletess Medical Labs that revealed 18 food sensitivities.  My wellness plan was a 4 day elimination diet avoiding the intolerant foods and supplements to heal leaky gut, which is what causes food intolerance and hundreds of other illnesses.  Its well worth the time to study all aspects of leaky gut, but most traditional MD’s don’t acknowledge leaky gut.  While doing the elimination diet I began to notice my sinus’s would clear up and then when I ate certain foods they would become congested.  15 of the 18 intolerant foods have cleared up and the 3 that remain are: dairy, wheat gluten and sugar.

“I am curious as to how you came to the conclusion that food molecules in the blood stream from leaky gut caused the body to release histamines to detox them thru the sinuses and lymphatic system”.  This was from my own research.  Here is an excellent article to explain this: https://experiencelife.com/article/how-to-heal-a-leaky-gut/ Towards the bottom of the article there is a sub-title: The food-allergy connection.  But, this article doesn’t go into dairy, wheat gluten and sugar causing sinus congestion, this is how these foods affect me and I’ve already had the blood test to tell me I’m sensitive to these foods. Best wishes in your health studies!
