Better Together

Let’s help each other thru this virus

Asking for all of us to support each other during this. This is tough for our anxiety, depression and the forced isolation is not good for us at all!  It would mean the world to me to hear from you and I most certainly respond with encouragement.  Please help…let’s not feel so alone!

I have been a recluse, not agoraphobic but as close as you can get and still hold an outside job, I guess, for years. I was aiming to start getting out, and had plans but got sick. then I made other plans. and now that every thing is shut down by the governor, that is cancelled to.

The surgeon general is telling everybody to live like me, instead of everybody wanting me to live like them, for a change. I gotta laugh at that.

I love your story because its mine too, except for going to a job .I’m a Senior.  Because of a bad back, had to give up driving, then fell and broke my tail bone so have been in a wheelchair.  Just to add to my adventure, my COPD got so much worse that I need O2.  Love your attitude….guess we pioneered a trend, huh???

yea, I guess so! sorry for such a late reply. I was watching the wrong email for reply notifications!

Check out these by memes a Facebook friend with BAD anxiety to the point I worry if his mental health is actually something worse than that from time to time.
I think it is how he is dealing with it. First it was denial and saying it was a conspiracy and was created by people to find ways to control the population and make money. Then everyone started losing money and he believes now. So instead he posts stuff like this. Works for me.

Love these, but I’d go thru the screen after all these people just for the toilet paper!  Too amazing, my Meals on Wheels delivery came this morn. and we each given a roll of toilet paper. No kidding. Yesterday was my birthday and I said that all I wanted was a roll of toilet paper…well today my wish came true!

That’s perfect! Happy belated birthday!

I had got a big container of it long before the crisis because it was on sale, so I have plenty…
Lucky me

What creative ways are you finding to connect with others? Here are a few that I’ve been using and talking to folks about this week:

  • Bring back letter writing! Send a postcard, or letter to a friend or family member. Even if they live close by, it’s wonderful to get something in the mail that reminds us of our community!
  • Have ‘virtual’ dinners! Call friends/neighbors/family using Skype, Zoom, or other video app and have dinner together!
  • Have virtual game nights! Play games you don’t need any materials for like charades, head’s up, or pictionary (if you have a large piece of cardboard or whiteboard this works well).
  • Volunteer virtually! Check out www.volunteermatch.org for ideas on helping out via phone, or doing admin tasks for organizations at home.

Share ideas you have for keeping connected to your community!

Great ideas, thank you.  We have to keep informed but too much TV bad news is just taking a toll. I am s Sr. (ANT) and am “technically challenged”.  I would love advice on how I could get “Tech 101” on line. Can’t even use my phone for anything but making phone calls!  So doing anything virtually isn’t possible yet!  There must be something out there, just need advice on how to get to YouTube, etc. Thank you so much!

I hear you! Thanks for your post and bringing this to light as I am sure you are not alone! Do you have a child or grandchild who can walk you through some of these activities over the phone? If not, some of these links might be helpful.

There are some great general tips on learning more about navigating the web for seniors here:

Hope these help! Let us know if you need more resources!

Oh, bless you!  Nope, no family left at all and I never married, so no help there.  I lived a “Mary Tyler Moore” type life. I have a Bachelors degree in Business and now, can’t  do anything except getting to you!!!  Will try these links and I agree, there must be many of us in the same situation. God is using you as an answer to my prayer.  Blessings!

Oh, I’m so glad you said that. Isn’t it so important at these times to express our gratitude.  So glad you are there for us and hope our “family” is growing and will participate.  Again, thank you so much!

Oh my goodness I can relate so much! I just found this community tab in brain fit life! I have been having bad anxiety whenever I actually leave my house. Also trying to find healthy ways for me and my family to juggle this time at home. Podcasts and books have really been helping me. Learning new things everyday helps me to feel better and also exercising, yoga, meditation or even praying helps me as well.

Just thrilled that you found my message!  Oh, you are doing Sooo much to help yourself and your family, wow,  Guess  it must be the depression but have zero motivation to do anything to help myself.  I’m “elderly”, on O2 and need to use a wheelchair so basically  apt. bound with no family left so I kind of just survive everyday, watch tv and eat!  I’d love if you could pray for me to get some motivation and most of all, a purpose from God!  Bless you

I know you were writing to Alisa, but I wanted to offer some thoughts about your motivation if I may. Often motivation can be greatly enhanced by ‘seeing’ ourselves expressed in the world, even if in small ways. This can be through doing something for others, or being creative and thus expressing ourselves externally.

When we do these kinds of activities, we see ourselves more vividly, and we are more in touch with our unique contribution and meaning in the world. This often leads to a desire to take care of ourselves more, as we realize we have something important to offer.

I am wondering about things you can do to participate more in the world in a way that feels approachable right now. Some ideas that come to mind are to write someone a letter, reach out to an old friend via phone, volunteer to be on a board for some organization you appreciate, tutor or mentor someone, do art (paint, draw, write stories/poems/journal, etc.). When you start seeing yourself expressed through connection to others or creativity, it can be really motivating. You have something to offer that is uniquely yours!

I hope this has some meaning for you.

Best!

Thank you sooo much for your input!  I have recently connected with friends from elem thru high school. We haven’t been in touch since 1971. It has been wonderful!  I finally came out of hiding from DV, feeling safe.  I lift them up and they are reminding me “what I used to be”., the real me!  Gradually, I am feeling worthy again.  Now, I just have to work on me!  I have a caregiver 4 days a week so and kind of feeling obligated   to her to keep getting better so that’s good. Missing part, doing positive thins for me because I want to get better. But you connected those dots for me!  Zoe, you are a treasure!

I love hearing about the “real” you coming out again and connecting with old friends! I often think the ‘raw’ version of ourselves as children can get lost in the complexities of adulthood, so it’s great to find that again. We are rooting for you and your journey! -Zoe

on May 2, 2020

Yes, the “raw” version of me was the “good girl” yet a free spirit and always had some mischief ready to break out.  We were talking about their grand children not having graduation this year. We all laughed that I secretly organized a “run thru” of the boys locker room right after the Grad. ceremony.  Naughty but sooo much fun!

HI SSV77.  You asked for support.  What have you identified you need support with?

I’m a new newbie, and am startled to find on just the first page of this thread so many people who have the same problems I have!  This is like Alice Through The Looking Glass (the companion to Alice in Wonderland) !

So, again, if you don’t mind, I would like to know where you live in a general way, so to have a grounded place in which    to imagine or “see” you.  I am in Northern California, east of the Bay Area.

Welcome!!!   Not many people would “get” that you asked for my location but I do. I’m in the Tampa Bay, FL area.  My main needs are handling anxiety, depression and no motivation.  Also, long story, but I am elderly, disabled and alone so need a ” purpose”..Something I can be excited about as I first wake up other than oh, shoot,  is it Wed, Thurs?  Most of all, thank you for asking…no one has ever asked me.  OK, then, what do you need?  I will send my best intentions to you in No. CA.
