Intermittent fasting

I’ve recently started trying out 16 hour fasting. I’ve done it for a couple of days, and I’ve felt great! I’m more energetic and I’ve noticed an improved mood. Also, I’ve been careful not to overdo it. I started out with 12 hour fasts a couple of times a week, and worked my way up to 16 hours. Furthermore, I’ve been careful to make sure my diet is healthy and my calorie intake is appropriate. Nevertheless, there’s always room for improvement. So I ask: are there any tips, recommendations or warnings concerning fasting that I should know other than taking care of my diet?

Great to hear! Here are a few considerations for healthy intermittent fasting:

  • Eat adequate protein at the meals before and after fasting to maintain muscle mass. Exercising regularly is also essential.
  • Drink plenty of water and non-caloric beverages (green tea, herbal teas, etc.) during the waking portion of the fasting period.
  • Don’t use intermittent fasting as an excuse to eat nutrient-poor foods when you are eating—continue to eat a whole foods diet with high nutrient density, avoiding sugar, dairy, gluten, processed foods, as well as foods to which you have an allergy or sensitivity.
  • A key principle to remember is to use fasting for health improvement, not to burden your body with excessive or inappropriate levels of fasting for your body. If you begin to notice any negative effects (besides mild hunger) such as headache, low blood sugar, dizziness, fogginess, or inability to think clearly, then your body is no longer benefitting from your fast. If this occurs, it is necessary to reduce the length or frequency of your fast. Fasting is meant to be used as a health benefit, not as a stressor to your body.
  • For most people fasting results in no negative side effects when done correctly, however if you have hypoglycemia, diabetes, or other medical conditions that require you to eat more often, fasting may not be appropriate for you. Check with your doctor before initiating intermittent fasting.

Hope these help! Best!

Thank you so much for the information! I’ll keep being careful with my diet and pay attention to any side effects that could arise. Blessings to you, Zoe.
