My son who has ADD is really struggling with impulsive behavior and work/life balance. He follows the a healthy diet, the Omni diet. Do you have any suggestions? He is so stressed and sad.

Hi chantellel,

Thank you for reaching out about your son and I’m sorry to hear that he is struggling. I imagine that’s very hard to witness.

Have you read Healing ADD? In that book, Dr. Amen outlines a robust  protocol for the many forms of ADD from several angles: biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. It is well worth exploring for more in-depth information.

Impulsive behavior is common in classic ADD (type 1), and can lead to shame, guilt, and the resultant sadness that it sounds like your son is experiencing. Biologically, this behavior can be helped by a higher protein, lower carbohydrate diet, as well as supplements such as Brain MD’s Neurovite Plus, Omega-3 Power and Focus & Energy.

To address the work/life balance piece, I would encourage him to seek professional brain health coaching support which can make a tremendous difference in reducing stress, and integrating behavioral and thought changes for long-term benefit. We have coaches available who can meet with him either in-person (at some clinic locations), via video-conference, or by phone.

in the meantime, he could use this website for support on various fronts including meditation audios for relaxation and brain games for help with attention.

Best to you-Zoe
