Grief

Just found out my brother died.  It wasn’t unexpected – he was morbidly obese, smoked, with diabetes and refusing to come out of denial.  I’m in shock.  So – where do I find stuff to read on healthy grieving?  Any suggestions?  I am renting a room in my brother’s home so want to be a support to his wife and family.  I know now why I want to be here with a healthy brain for THEM.  Any suggestions?

We are very sorry to hear of the loss of your brother.  With my patients, I have them talk about their loved ones in a balanced way (the positive and frustrations), know they still live in many places in your brain, and engage in brain healthy habits to help the grief not get stuck.  Read the limbic chapter in my book Change Your Brain, Change Your Life.

Thank you Dr. Amen.  Your compassion touches my heart and will give me some good “homework” for this weekend.  They were out of the country for a wedding.  So many issues for the family to deal with – and now I have a few days and an assignment so I go through this as strong as possible.  Yes, my brother lives many places in my brain – and I’ve already been struggling with the limbic side – so will definitely re-read it in your book.  Thanks again – I’m so touched that your responded personally Dr. Amen.  Thank you.
