GERD Issues Anyone??

HI Folks! Over several years I have tried many times to get off GERD medication and failed given it has permantly damaged the partial cells and protective mucous membrane in the esophagus.  I am on the lowest dose that works for me at 6 mg per day of omeprazole…

Has anyone “having this same long term use issue” found a way to get off the drugs, reverse the process and cure the burn via a “now normal” squamous epithelium mucosal lining in the lower esophagus?  These drugs do initially help with ulcers and other issues however, no question in my mind that they effect nutrient absorption, brain health plus other issues long term..

Hi Leo,
I was on GERD meds for a few yrs and I read that they can cause bone fractures over time. This frightened me  because my mother already has so much bone loss. I was afraid this would happen to me.  I went on the Primal diet by Mark Sisson. No Wheat, breads or grains. One day I took a chance and stopped taking the meds for GERD and I have never taken them since. It takes a long time to figure out what is causing the problem. Process of elimination and recording. But I believe GERD is caused from something you eat that your body doesn’t like. We are told grains and wheat are good for us. I lost 25 lbs and no more acidy stomach.
Take it for what it’s worth. I hope this helps you.

Hi Gem! Thanks so much for your response here!!. I am delighted to here you got off the proton pump inhibitors.. and sorry you had to go thru so much to deal with it. I read the drugs causes permanent damage to the cells I mentioned and was concern I had to be “on it for life” and I have met others even younger than me say the same thing!!.. I also know it throws off the Krebs digestion cycle and inhibits absorption of   B and other vitamins along with a few other minerals… So good for you for sure.. I guess I need to bite the bullet, give that a try and take a leap of faith!!  I have been using some of the diet suggestions here too. However, My organic wheat bread has been one of my main food staples for years. This may just be a big part of the answer here.. I may also have to wean off to something like Tagamet first.. As  though the brain issues aren’t enough to deal with! ..Thanks again for sharing this..
