fasting & sleep

Hello Dr. Amen,

Could you please help me with some advice regarding the relationship between fasting and sleep?

Every time I try fasting, (complete juice/water fasting, intermittent or limiting calories) I have problems staying asleep and wake up after 4-5 hours of sleep. I have tried to continue fasting for 2-3 days, thinking that the body will eventually get tired and used to less calories, however the sleep does not improve at all, making me feel very sleep deprived and with very little energy. I read about the benefits of fasting for the brain and entire body but I struggled so hard with the sleep deprivation and I had to give up.

Any advice on how to deal with this situation will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Cristiana

If fasting makes you worse I would limit it.  I think we should be doing things right most of the time, and then do 12 hour daily fasts … such as from dinner to breakfast.

I’ve found that even restricting calories can interfere with sleep. I think Dr. Amen’s suggestion to fast from dinner to breakfast makes more sense.
