Hi;

Hi I am 79 years old. and am in fairly good shape for my age, and still active, not overweight, still participated in sports until a few years ago. Should I make any adjustments in the Brain Fit Life exercise program.
I am also thinking of beginning a weight lifting program -squats, bench press, dead lifts, over head lifts, etc Would this be a good idea or if OK what adjustments should I make?

Hi derdoc! Great question! Weight training is a great addition for any of us, as long as it’s done safely so be sure to get some guidance from a trainer if you are just beginning with weights. The focus should be on proper form and strengthening for muscle and bone health. The four pillars of a good exercise regimen include:

  • Aerobic (walking, dancing, jogging, biking, swimming, etc.)
  • Resistance: weight training, rubber bands, calisthenics using own body weight for resistance
  • Flexibility: Stretching, Yoga, etc.
  • Balance: yoga, Pilates, ballet, tai chi, etc.

To keep it interesting, vary what you do in a day with a combination of these basics, and be sure to sweat several times per week. Best to you!

Thanks .
It’s ok then to walk like I’m late for 40 minutes 4X’s /week?

Yes! That’s great! As long as you are feeling energized afterwards instead of depleted, you are on the right track! Interval training is another great option for aerobic exercise and can add some variation to your walk: This would mean that during your walk, do 5-8 “bursts” of 30-60 seconds in which you walk as fast as you can, then back to a moderate pace. Where are you adding in your weight training? Different days than the walking or the same?

Yes, Weight training will just be 2 days/week. 3×5 squats & bench press one day and 3×5 row, dead lift & overhead lift the other day. Walking etc. on alternate days.

Hi JoAnn,

Quantity could be part of it if you are eating more than you need. Other things to consider are adequate exercise, restorative sleep, stress, and food allergies. Any of these sound like areas that might need attention?
