Exercise 101

Hello,
I have exercised for years…attended many gyms but not really understanding the dos & don’t s of a safe routine. The following are my questions:

  • Should I exercise as soon as I wake up in the morning, before eating, before actually having moved around?
  • Should I exercise as close as 2 hours before going to bed?
  • Is it correct to exercise right before eating or right after eating?

Thank you for your help.

I like to work exercise into my daily life. For example, I walk every morning to get the papers. I park on the street and walk up to my house with everything rather than parking at my door. I have found that a walk after dinner just before it gets dark helps me to sleep better. I walk to the grocery store to get groceries. I go to the gym also to do some weight training and aerobics 3 times a week. But I believe working exercise into ones daily life is the best thing. this is what they do in the Blue Zones, the places where people are the healthiest. Great inspiring book written by Dan Beuttner.

Exercise in the morning is a great way to start the day and is very beneficial for brain and body health. There are differing opinions on whether to eat before exercise in the morning, and certainly the answer to this can depend on many factors, including the health of the individual. Generally, I recommend at least a small snack before exercising in the morning, and often a small smoothie can be a great choice (see our fabulous recipes on this site!). After exercise, try to eat some clean protein within an hour. And ALWAYS drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise.

And it’s best to refrain from exercising at least 2-3 hours before bed as it can have a stimulating effect, causing many of us to have trouble falling asleep.

Hope this helps! 🙂
