Hello! Big question! Traumatic events effect each of us differently, but there are many things you can do to help support the brain to better functioning. How quickly we see symptom improvements depends on many factors, but the greater number of healthy things you can do for yourself to support healing the better. These may include:

  • Healthy Nutrition Support through balanced whole foods eating (see Omni Diet) and supplement support for a healthy brain (such as Omega-3s, Multivitamin, Vitamin D)
  • EMDR or other psychotherapies to process the emotional trauma in the body, and rewire the brain to feel less “stuck” on traumatic events
  • Adequate sleep
  • Activities to calm the brain and the body such as meditation, peaceful music, kill the ANTs, and other exercises (see Strengthen My Mind tab)
  • Being creative or productive in a way that feeds your current and future life on a deep level. This may mean an artistic pursuit (writing, drawing, cooking, dancing, etc.) or doing for others (neighbor help, volunteering, etc.). This can be in large or small ways, but having purpose and meaning going forward often helps us to remember we are more than the negative events that have happened to us, and our story is still unfolding, offering hope and growth.

I really appreciate your thoughtful response.  Your last point in particular stood out to me.  Thank you.

Thank you for this information. Trauma and domestic violence have also touched my life, but I am healing from them and moving forward. Many of these steps I have used except the emdr technique. I am doing well, thank goodness, and all of that is in the rear view mirror.
