Does wheat and/or gluten contribute towards belly fat?

Updated on May 8, 2017 in Nutrition

I want to know if that is true. However, I doubt it though. Whole grains are good for you in the end. The biggest culprit, I believe, for belly fat is sugar (in high amounts).

Sugar is the biggest culprit–you are correct. But most forms of grains we get in a standard American diet are in the end just that–sugar. The wheat we eat is usually refined, processed, white flour that is essentially sugar in another form. Excess refined carbohydrates in any form are a well documented contributor to excess fat, not to mention their inflammatory effects on the brain and many other organs.

Whole grains are a different food entirely, and if you want to include them in your diet, focus on the gluten free, low glycemic, unrefined versions:  whole oats (GF), millet, buckwheat, quinoa, and brown or black rice in moderate amounts (use them like a garnish). For best brain and body health, we encourage the majority of your plate to be high fiber, nutrient dense vegetables. These, along with high quality protein, and healthy fats are a great way to use food to help you reach a healthy weight. -Coach Zoe
