I had an accident on October 19th when me car door was caught by the wind as I was getting out and threw it back at me.  I was diagnosed the next Tuesday.  The only thing I have been told is to not use my brain and let it heal.  I still having problems with reading, writing, watching TV, and being on the internet.  Today I read 3 pages in a magazine before the headaches caught me.  I also have nausea with the headaches and some balance problems.  What would you suggest I do to speed up recovery?

Thanks for reaching out. Some key pieces to your healing:

1) Get 8 hours of sleep every day on a regular schedule
2) Consistently take our packets of Brain Power Max which have a high potency healing combination of nutrients to support your brain during recovery.
3) Focus on high quality nutrition (no “junk” that will impede healing–see recipes on this site),
4) Maintain adequate hydration
5) Rest often throughout the day. Don’t “push” yourself–be gentle and stop before your “limit” with activities.
6) Reach out to others for support. People love to be asked to help (it makes us feel good!) so remember that if it’s not natural for you.

These will provide you a foundational starting point for healing. Sending healing thoughts your way! -Coach Zoe

I had a concussion about 20 years ago but most of my life (at least that I can remember) I hit my head a lot (not every day, but a lot)  — like a couple of days ago, I was looking for something in the refrigerator and coming out, I hit my head on the freezer door handle (this happened twice in a few minutes) or I hit my head coming out of a car (mine or other’s cars). What can I do to protect myself against harm (short of wearing a helmet everywhere I go)?

I should add that sleep is an issue these days. I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to fall back asleep. I catch up on the Shabbat (Sabbath) to some degree, but I sense this is a bad pattern. There is a lot of stress in my life right now and I try to banish the ANTs, but it doesn’t work so well.

Thanks for your posts. I would suggest some grounding exercises (mindfulness, meditation, prayer) to practice being more “in your body”. This can help tremendously with increasing awareness of our surroundings, and our bodies movement through space. Stress and sleep can certainly exacerbate this accident proneness, so addressing these together can help all of them. If you don’t already, try doing a mindfulness meditation daily, even if only for a few minutes. See what effect this has on your health. Best!

I had a concussion 3 months ago.  I slept a lot and did avoid screens and reading.  Focusing gave me a headache.  I took fish oil and followed the advice from this site about eating healthy.  It helped.  I’m back to working full time and the headaches are better. The last thing that hasn’t improved is waking in the middle of the night so I have no advice on that.  But the Doctors advice about letting your brain heal is good advice.

I there anything a vegan can take that does the same job as fish oil?

Vegans can use algae oil supplements and although you will not be able to get the iideal ratio of EPA:DHA as you will with a fish oil supplement, it is better than not supplementing. In addition, use 1 TB flax meal daily (add to smoothie, salad, etc.) for additional essential fatty acids. Best! -Zoe
