What are some good brain healthy medicines for colds or allergies? I woke up this morning with a lot of sinus pressure and have been having throat trouble for like 2 days… I know that like most medicines have alcohol in them… are there better alternatives. I’ve gotten the covid vaccine… so I hope its not that but I do feel very short of breath when I do anything.

Always check with your doctor when you are having concerning symptoms, particularly shortness of breath. While that can be allergy-related, you want to make sure to rule out anything else that may need more immediate attention.

Generally speaking, keeping the immune system healthy is your best bet to protect against viruses and allergies. To do that we need regular restorative sleep, vitamins C, D and A, a healthy gut (probiotics, fiber, fermented foods), regular exercise, a diet of whole foods and plenty of clean water, and stress attendance.

For seasonal allergies, a good air filter, lowering exposure to pollutants whenever possible, and minimizing/avoiding use of harsh chemicals in cleaning products and body care products can also be helpful (see ewg.org for ideas of ‘cleaner’ alternatives). If you have these symptoms regularly, food sensitivities may be contributing, so food allergy/sensitivity testing and/or an elimination diet can be very impactful.

Once you are sick, adequate rest is important, as are plenty of fluids (broths are great for minerals), sunlight, and fresh air. For sinus pressure, try the neti pot, which can offer instant relief. Acupuncture/acupressure is also very helpful for symptoms if you have access to it. Keep your throat coated with water and lemon or lime with ginger juice, or gargle salt water occasionally to lessen the pain. OTC medications suppress the symptoms but typically don’t help support your immune system. There are zinc lozenges/sprays that some find helpful for sore throat, but if allergies are at play, finding out ways to minimize them through using an air filter, and lowering exposure through food/environment is your best bet.

I hope that helps, and that you feel better soon!
