What is the latest about BDNF and its protection from getting Alzheimer’s/dementia? What suppliments

or foods contain BDNF? I just read a study that talks about it.The results were most favorable to older women. Thanks!

Thanks for the great question! BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is a protein that has a powerful effect on the brain by increasing and maintaining neuronal development. Many things influence the production of BDNF, including the recommendations outlined here on Brain Fit Life. Some of the key elements to consider:

  • Nutrition: Be sure to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits rich in polyphenols (eat the rainbow) and avoid sugars, refined flours, processed foods, and other nutrient-poor pseudo-foods
  • Supplements: Take a regular multivitamin like Neurovite Plus that includes plenty of antioxidants and added vegetable/fruit blends
  • Exercise: Get regular cardiovascular exercise that raises your heart rate and gets you sweating
  • Mediation/Yoga/Intentional Relaxation
  • Sleep: Get at least 7 hours of consistent, restorative sleep
  • Sunlight: Regular adequate daily exposure (time needed depends on melanin level) increases BDNF, as well as initiates vitamin D production for immune support
