Asperger’s Syndrome

Back in about 2000 my husband was scanned at your clinic and diagnosed through conversations with one of your psychologists who also had Asperger’s Syndrome.  Little was known about it back then.  It’s been very helpful to understand what made him a bit different and now we are finding good books on how it affects relationships.  Our son, 12 at the time, was also scanned several times at the same clinic and it was so very helpful.  He has autism and is mentally challenged.  I was curious if these scans taken back then could be reread with all the new information you have available due to your large collection of scans.  My son is  now 33 and our whole family has just watched all your videos (ordered off PBS), read your books and have completely changed our diet and exercise.  Saffron has made a huge difference in our son-so much more energy and doing an hour a day on the treadmill–also trying new foods.  He has texture and color issues with food so I’ve become a master of disguise.  He loves most all fruit if it is frozen! Unfortunately he will not try any nuts or seeds.  We’re taking lots of supplements.  With Asperger’s and Autism do you suggest any particular supplements?  My niece just came to your clinic and had her adopted son scanned.  The diet has made a huge difference!  Any information on the above would be appreciated.

Thanks for your post! It is great to hear that your family has been able to commit to shifting so many lifestyle behaviors in a more positive direction! Congrats on your efforts!

While the best supplements to support brain health are bio-individual, many of us can benefit from a strong multivitamin/multimineral like Neurovite and a high-quality omega-3 supplement like Omega-3 Power. Other supplements have been found to benefit some individuals with ASD, including many B-vitamins (folate, B6, B12), vitamin C, L-carnitine, betaine, and N-acetyl cysteine. Often sub-optimal nutrient levels (which many/most of us have) can worsen symptoms or lower functioning, so these can be essential to address. There are micronutrient lab panels available to test for these.

Additionally, it is imperative to address gut health through a whole foods diet as you have been doing, but also one in which food allergens and sensitivities are avoided. I would encourage a food allergy/sensitivity panel if you have not had one. Robust gut health has much to do with our brain health, as so many of our neurotransmitters, immune cells, and inflammatory proteins originate there! Plant-based probiotic-rich yogurts or kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi, or taking a multi-strain probiotic to encourage beneficial bacteria in conjunction with a high fiber diet is essential for a healthy microbiome. Nutritional changes to this end have been found to be strongly beneficial in research.

For more individualized support, please consider making an appointment with one of our integrative physicians who can individualize a supplement protocol for your family.

Best to you and yours!
