anesthesia and the brain

Dr.Amen is the FIRST MD I have ever seen address this situation.I resisted  a surgery that only could be done with general anesthesia.I kept asking the MD if there was any other way,and he kept saying no.Since I had general anesthesia before for another condition,I knew it was not good for me after feeling so awful afterward. After many years of pain and resisting and research,I found my condition could be cured with Interventional Radiology.and local anesthesia.I live near some great academic centers, choose one,had the surgery and so glad I waited.I still gave myself more recovery time than they suggested,”you can go to work the next day”.WRONG! I took the next 4 days off and was ready to work after that rest.THANK YOU DR.AMEN for letting others know to not think of anesthesia as harmless.

Yes, indeed! Thanks very much for sharing your story with us and being such a great example of advocating for your health. While there are times when general anesthesia is necessary, it is certainly important that we attend to the effects it can have on the brain, and give ourselves support through the rest and recovery phase as well as in preparation for surgery. And learning about options for alternative treatments when possible is really important so that we can make more informed decisions based on our health history, current health, and number of surgeries we have had in our lives. Best!
