In the course Dr. Amen shares that alcohol is toxic to the brain, and the Mind Diet suggests a small glass of read wine a day is healthy. Could you share more about this and if indeed red wine is a beverage that you don’t want to include in your diet?

There is a lot of research on the benefits of a whole-foods diet that includes the use of small amounts of red wine for its antioxidant content. However, for those who are not already drinking red wine, adding it to your diet is not recommended, as there are far better ways to increase your consumption of nutrient-dense plants rich in antioxidants. Furthermore, for many folks alcohol consumption goes along with consumption of less nutritious foods, negative impacts to sleep and energy, decreased mental focus and mood issues. Those who have had any kind of brain injury are particularly susceptible to the negative impacts of alcohol, though that is only one marker of one’s health history that would be contraindicated for alcohol use.

To completely avoid the negative impact of alcohol but benefit from red grape antioxidants, supplements like resveratrol, which is in our Neurovite Plus, are a great addition to your healthy lifestyle. If you do decide to include red wine, limit your consumption to a few glasses/week at most and be sure to support your liver health by increasing dark green veggies, having ample protein, and increasing water consumption.

Best!
