5-HTP keeping me awake

I’ve recently been taking 100 mg of 5-HTP at night because I tend to wake up 2 or 3 times a night.
However since taking 100 mg an hour before bed as instructed. I find that it keeps me awake all night.
It feels like I’m about to drop off to sleep and then I suddenly wake up.

I’ve stopped taking them and now i can at least get off to sleep. Has anyone else had similar problems. Can you recommend a good safe supplement to aid restful sleep?

There are many reasons we wake during the night including hormone imbalances, stress/anxiety, not enough exercise, environment (sounds, temperature, etc.), nutritional deficiencies or overuse of caffeine/sugar, etc. You might take an inventory of these and see if there are some supportive steps you can take in these ways. For a supplement, Dr. Amen’s Restful Sleep is great  for this purpose. Start with 1 capsule 30-60 minutes before bed, and increase up to 4 capsules if needed. What brain type are you? This might determine your need for GABA Calming or Everyday Stress Relief during the day as well. 🙂 -Coach Zoe

I personally take a Melatonin & Vitamin B6 supplement. It is natural, safe & wont have me drowsy in the morning. Best of Luck!

I found the same thing with 5htp, but do very well with L-Tryptophan  Illogical, but that’s how it works for me…reliably.

As a brain type 9, it may benefit you to take Every Day Stress Relief to maintain a sense of calm and balance the stress hormone cortisol, both of which can influence your sleep cycle. – Coach Zoe

I had the same thing happening to me. I am type 11 and was taking 5HTP before bed and dreaming vigorously and hardly sleeping. When I stopped taking it, I am sleeping through the night–don’t seem to wake up at all now.

I have  been taking Ashwaganda with Rhodiola and magnesium citrate. I was waking up 5-6 times a night and got it down to 3-4 and fall asleep rather quickly.

Thank you 🙂 Still wish I could sleep without waking up but I hope it will happen when I beat the stress.

I have trouble with the 5HTP as well. I was taking it a couple of weeks ago and found myself unusually irritable, almost hyper–not like my normal self at all. I think some of us are unable to convert the 5THP correctly. Now I am trying SAMe and that seems to be working much better. At least I am not crabby about everything and I feel more like myself.
