1/2 aspirin per week for reducing cholesterol

We confer with a functional medicine NP for our yearly check-ups She is the first person to recommend a 1/2 dose per week of aspirin to lower my husband’s cholesterol. I know aspirin can make your stomach bleed, so we are hesitant and looking for safer options for both of us. I cannot take red yeast rice, as recommended by my acupuncturist, unfortunately. Thanks so much!

Red yeast rice is highly beneficial, but if you cannot take that,  you might choose to use other supplements such as berberine, plant sterols, and garlic, all of which can modulate healthy cholesterol levels. It’s also important to note that regular exercise, a whole-foods, plant-based diet low in sugar and processed foods is essential. Best!

Thanks so much…then it looks like a 1/2 aspirin is not recommended?

I encourage you to work with your healthcare practitioner to make an informed decision about what’s best for you given your whole health history and priorities at this time. Best!

I would encourage you to talk with your physician about the research on use of both or either of these supplements for your hypercholesterolemia. Some physicians will use a combination of both medication and nutraceuticals for the layered benefit in patients with very high cholesterol. Here are a few research articles that review the benefits of these supplements on cholesterol levels:

Effects of a nutraceutical combination containing berberine (BRB), policosanol, and red yeast rice (RYR), on lipid profile in hypercholesterolemic patients: A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials – PubMed (nih.gov)

Safety and Efficacy of the Consumption of the Nutraceutical “Red Yeast Rice Extract” for the Reduction of Hypercholesterolemia in Humans: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis – PMC (nih.gov)

Clinical evidence of efficacy of red yeast rice and berberine in a large controlled study versus diet – PubMed (nih.gov)

Best to you!
