Tapering off of Prozac

I am on a high daily dose of prozac and want to slowly try weaning myself off to see if I still need it – given all of the brain healthy habits I’m integrating into my life (which I fully expect to continue to improve).  I know I’ll need doctor support but want to introduce my doctor to this body of work.  Any suggestions on how to bring this site and its support to the attention of a psychiatrist in such a way as he will see it for the sound medical basis it has been built on.   Haha – how do I refer my doctor to Dr. Amen’s work?

Any tips on how to back off the prozac would be much appreciated.  I’m taking the Brain and Body supplements and SamE but can’t afford the Mental Focus tablets just now (maybe after eliminating the prozac costs?!)  Staying hydrated and eating better.  Primarily food focus has been on eliminating glutens and sugars – I’m eating a lot more vegetables and am progressing with eliminating processed foods.  My life seems chaotic enough and I don’t have free access to a kitchen (I rent a room) – so I work on what I can and am quite satisfied with my progress thus far.

Hi there! Good for you for working on eliminating sugar and gluten and eating more vegetables–all really important for optimal brain health. Keeping up with good nutrition practices goes a long way to improve mood, so keep it up! In addition, exercise is a key component that has been proven to have anti-depressant effects, as well as sound sleep. If you haven’t already, those may be next areas of health to address next.

In terms of medication changes, if you haven’t already, please work with your doctor to taper off in a safe way and to lessen withdrawal symptoms.

Congratulations on all the steps you’ve taken so far!

Right – no doubt I’ll work with the doctor.  So I am still looking for suggestions on how to introduce my doctor to Dr. Amen’s body of work.  Thanks

Have your doctor watch my TEDx talk and give him a copy of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life.

My doctor was so thrilled with my progress and accepted your book with gratitude.  He’s also going to work with me on the medication.  Money is a huge issue with me and I can email him now!  Thank you Dr. Amen!  Maybe we’ve opened a new door for a few of his other patients!
