Trouble completing One Page Miracle section

I am continuing to have trouble with the One Page Miracle Work/School section. As a kid all I wanted to be was a soldier, I spent 4 years in the Army, since then I have worked in a few different fields, Electronics, Communications, Health, ect…more by chance than planning, now at 57 I know I can’t stay in the career I’m in, but don’t know what I want, I never really have. Any ideas?

A good place to start would be your local junior college who usually give aptitude and/or vocational tests.  Perhaps a vocational school could test you.

Thanks for the input, I have taken a couple of different tests from two colleges and a career center, all indicated that I have no real interest in anything, one indicated that I would be best suited to be an Officer in the military or a Conservation Officer. Both options are out at this stage of my life, and I’m not in a position to return to school.

What are some activities you like outside of work? Sometimes those are the best indications of what you might want to do more of the time, even if just directly related. Another idea is thinking about the environment in which you would like to spend much of your day. Outside? Inside? A lot of people? A few? At a desk? Moving around? If you can think of things you are naturally inclined towards, even if they don’t have to do with work per se, that can be a good starting point to explore things that could translate into work. Happy to help brainstorm with you if you would like to share!

Thanks for the response, I haven’t done anything outside of work in years, with two small kids my days pretty busy, weekends are for catching up on all the things I couldn’t get to during the week.  I naturally gravitate to jobs that are high risk, but with a family, (I’ve discussed it with them, and naturally it’s a “no go”), not to mention I’m not in the kind of shape required of such work. I have had jobs that kept me isolated from the world and others, like my current position, that puts me in direct contact with people, patients and their families. I guess I was happiest when I worked in an isolated and physically demanding environment (potentially dangerous). Again family and physical condition rule this option out. Thanks again for your help.

When you say “high risk” do you mean more physically dangerous work? Can you give an example of a job you have enjoyed in this capacity/ And do you think you prefer to be outside as well as alone, and more physical? And is getting in better physical condition for work something you might consider?

The opportunities have been in combat zones in various parts of the world. In the distant past my job involved working indoors and outdoors, high stress, sometimes with some potential risk of injury or death. I’ve injured my back to the point that I have to take it into consideration, and my current employment often involves helping morbidly obese, severely debilitated patient to get better, which is continuing to play havoc with what’s left of my back.  I have a wife and young children and I want to be involved as much as possible in their lives for as long as I am able. I’m actually fairly strong, eat well and stretch/yoga every morning and evening, I’m trying to get back into weight lifting, but between helping the kids with school work and choirs around the house there isn’t much time left. I prefer to work alone, outdoors. Thanks again for all your help.

Have you considered something in the parks department or in forestry? I know there are many entry level positions in the parks department for sure, so you wouldn’t necessarily need more schooling to work there. And one way to see if a job might be a good fit for you is to do some volunteering in the field. That way you can get a taste for what something might be like in a more realistic sense. What kinds of things did you naturally like doing growing up? Again, sometimes that’s a great indication of what our core selves are made to do once we are grown up!

Hi, would it make sense to forget about the Goal setting for now, I’ve been working on this problem for years, and maybe there is no answer. So maybe it makes more sense not to waste any more time trying to figure it out and focus my energy elsewhere? What do you think?

There are very few jobs like that where I live, I have applied for the 2 or 3 that do not require degrees, but no luck, I don’t meet the minimum requirements, and to be honest, the pay is not much higher than minimum wage, I wouldn’t be able to pay my bills on what they offer. My days start at 6 am and end generally around 9:30 pm so there’s not much spare time for volunteer work. I don’t remember much from my childhood, I do know that I read a lot, sometimes 2 or 3 books a week. There is no major industry where I live, other than hospitals, so most jobs that pay well require an hour or two commute. In addition most of the jobs I have found require a minimum of a Bachelors degree, preferably a Masters, I have two AS Degrees. Again I appreciate you help and advice. Thanks

Maybe you could find a way to do civilian work for the military?  For example, civilians can work on ships that deliver to military vessels.  Believe me, that work can be hazardous!  — I think it’s 3 months on, 3 months off for Military Sea Lift Command.

Thanks, I’ve been trying that option for some time, but my Clearance expired a long time ago, and I have been out of the service for a long time, I simply do not carry the skill sets or education necessary for such work. I keep looking just in case. Thanks again. I realize that my current situation will probably not allow for the kind of work that I find interesting, and it’s probably for the best.
