Gadolinium for contrast MRI

I just read gadolinium is a heavy metal and can remain in the brain. How long does it remain and how does one get rid of it? I had about 3 or so contrast MRI’s in my 50’s. They were not in the same year, maybe a few years apart. It says a chelating agent is sometimes used to lower the effects of the heavy metal but not all is removed. When would any side effects show up and what might they be? Thanks so much!

The research I have seen on gadolinium say that most is eliminated rapidly, but some can remain in tissues with a half-life of about 6 days. You can support your body’s detoxification efforts by eating daily dark greens, adequate protein, ample filtered water, and sweating (movement or sauna).

For more concentrated chelating treatments, I would encourage you to speak with an integrative physician or naturopath to determine what’s right for you based on your health history and current symptoms. Gadolinium toxicity is thought to be quite rare, but the research I’ve seen shows it can display more often with symptoms of kidney dysfunction, though I do not know much about other manifestations.

Best!
