I am just back from visiting my aunt and uncle, who are 91/93.both have great mental capacity, especially my aunt. Both have been social drinkers for most of their working years and now as well.Is it possible that alcohol is staving off dementia? It seems non-drinkers I know get dementia,I know this is anecdotal, but

Some elements of wine (resveratrol) are powerful antioxidants, and may contribute to lowering inflammation, but this is not reason to start drinking. For those who drink moderately there has been some research suggesting benefit long-term for cardiovascular health but high amounts of alcohol consumption can contribute to sleep difficulties, depression, and poor health. It’s a balance, and the type of alcohol, the amount, and the context in which it is consumed (health status, diet, exercise, other lifestyle factors) certainly matters significantly. Best! -Zoe
