Ideal cholesterol?

I believe Dr. Amen stated that cholesterol should be around 165 to be in a good place for hormone production.  I just had all my level checked, and they are quite low, but they’ve always been low.  Mine is 107 (well below normal), HDL is 45 (in low normal range), LDL is 51.6 (below normal) and triglycerides are 52 (in low normal range).  How do I go about raising these?

Great question! There are two pieces of your cholesterol that deserve attention here. Low LDL can be inherited or acquired through things such as infections so you want to explore the possible causes of low LDL with your physician. The second important piece is to try to raise HDL levels to a more optimal range. To do that we can focus on several lifestyle factors:

  • Getting regular intentional (hopefully enjoyable!) exercise (minimum of 150 minutes per week–intervals are great!)
  • Removing sugar, processed foods, and unhealthy fats from diet
  • Eating only organic, wild, grass-fed/finished, pastured animal proteins and enough of them for your weight and activity level
  • Including healthy fats: sprouted/raw nuts/seeds, avocado, wild fish, olive oil, etc.
  • Avoiding environmental toxins. Use an air purifier, water filter, and seek organic, local food sources whenever possible. Taking a multi-vitamin/multi-mineral complex, consuming fiber-rich, chlorophyll-rich and probiotic-rich foods can also help the body detoxify. Additionally, regular sweating (exercise, sauna use) and plenty of water are also important for detoxification.
  • Managing stress levels

Hope these give you a starting off point! Best! -Coach Zoe

Thank you, Coach Zoe.  I do many of these already, but not all, so I’ll work on those more.
