Change of Brain Type after re-assessment

Updated on September 18, 2018 in Brain Optimization

My initial Brain Health Assessment revealed that I am a Brain Type 4.
Now a few month later I did a re-assessment and I am now categorized as Brain Type 10.
I am in a rehabilitation process suffering from post-concussive symptoms.
Are these changes normal or even encouraged?
With the ‘personalized recommendations’ will I experience further changes in the Brain Type?
Is there a Brain Type we all should strive for?
THX, sincerely Thor

Hi Thor,
Yes, it can be normal to see a variation as we make changes over the course of time, and perhaps even more evident if you are in an acute stage of healing. A Brain Type 1 is considered “balanced” overall, although based on many factors that may not be something we end up with no matter how well we are doing taking care of ourselves. There are some things that are seemingly part of our personality structure that we will always need to be attentive to, such as a great ability to plan but a tendency towards worry, or a strong ability to multi-task but difficulty in sitting still for long periods. These are not “defects”, but areas that may need more care at certain times of our lives, particularly if they are causing us stress, impeding our function, or hurting our relationships. Hope that helps!
Best!

Today I participated in another brain-assessment which resulted in Brain Type 2.

As earlier mentioned, Brain Types can change. However the assessment report for Brain Type 2 suggests a lower activity of the prefrontal cortex. Further suggesting higher proteins and lower carb diet as well not to take supplements calming the brain.

My last assessment in July resulted in Brain Type 4 and in April Brain Type 10-suggesting a lower level of protein and a higher level of carbs.

My SPECT imagery (although not performed at the Amen clinic) suggested a  high activity of the prefrontal cortex.

Since I am suffering from insomnia and (suggested by a neurologist) producing high levels of cortisol. Therefore supplementing with serotonin and brain calming supplements.

It’s discombobulating, which way I should proceed forward: food, supplements…

I hear you that it feels discombobulating. Have you (or your loved ones) noticed much change in your behavior, mood, attention, or memory over the last few months? I know you were in an acute healing stage back in April, and wonder how that has proceeded for you and where you are in that process if you don’t mind sharing. -Zoe

.THX Zoe for your interest,

below a summary of my progress this year:

… from Dec 2017 to Mar 2018 I was in a tough stage (emotions, energy level, mental clarity). I was impatiens, had irritability, was unbearable-prepared plans to live separate from my family. However seeing friends, neighbours in their divorce proceeding I hang in there.  I explained to my daughter that I react to things, I wouldn’t do normally.  She agreed (seeing me placing cold items from the fridge back into cupboards or dishes into the fridge).  In April I started to feel improvement mentally and physically.  I approached ‘my rehabilitation’ like  pro-athlete, setting goal for each week ahead. By planning my schedules carefully, not overloading  a day with tasks and tight turn-around times, I managed to stay more relaxed, focusing more on the task/appointment ahead. These appointments were with a vision treatment program at a concussion clinic, a functional neurologist, neurofeedback, massage and gym activities. I prepared written down feedbacks and questionaires for my doctors at the clinics( getting the most out of these appointments). Moreover it felt I am actively involved in my rehabilitation-taking the lead. Each weekend I reviewed videos online to prepare exercise sessions for the week ahead in the gym. With a written down fitness plan, I believe I was more efficient in my gym time, and today I can ‘show off’ results physically, but the biggest side effect: Mentally I am stronger and gained a positive outlook again.  In my home office I placed the “Brain Fit 50 Ways to Grow Your Brain”, reading it daily, finished the book Brain Warrior and following recipes from  Brain Warrior’s Way cookbook. These days I am still not prepared to meet and greet people at larger gatherings, but enjoy times with others one on one. I do reach out to others who themselves or their family member has issues relating to health, providing my experience and suggestions. Crowded spaces and driving in a busy traffic still irritates me, but I am recognizing it right away and try to find a ‘valve’ to let go at that time. Again I approach my rehabilitation planned and pro-actively. That’s why I am uncertain which way I should proceed further, if the brain assessments tells me in August one thing on activity, food, supplements and was different in June-as well different to the image(although not sharp and detailed in contrast) of a SPECT scan. (Wow, I never wrote that much on a computer screen since fall 2016).

Great to hear of your progress and all the ways you have sought out support!

Although there are a lot of similarities between Type 4 and Type 10 (emotionally sensitive, tendency for mood fluctuations), a prominent difference is that Type 10 tends to get ‘stuck’ on thoughts, and need to have things a “certain way”. Is this a theme in your life?

…currently I sometimes get upset soon, usually when I task my brain with other though processes and get interrupted or challenged on some opinion, and very often when I am driving and other ‘drivers’ do not drive as expected by regulations or by my opinions. However, I am also able to detect these type of negative thoughts within a minute or so. So, yes, in a certain way I start off that I like things ‘the right/proper way’, but I am not really getting stuck on it.

This also relates to confusion. Sometimes I used to misplace items (even dishes into the fridge or cold items into the cupboard). Nowadays I am just about to do these things and a catch myself early enough.

Makes sense to me now that you are more of a type 4 now than a type 10. Sounds like great improvement in both of these examples!
