ALA is a powerful antioxidant, and is great for stabilizing blood sugar and may also improve cognition. There is the possibility of low blood sugar from use when in combination with diabetic medication. Thus, it is always important to let your physician know what supplements you are taking so that that they can make recommendations based on your medication regimen.
In general, to keep your blood sugar from getting too low, a few of the simplest things we can do are to:
1) Eat every 2-3 hours
2) Try to have protein, healthy fat and complex carbohydrate (vegetable, fruit, or non-gluten whole grain) with every small meal
3) Avoid caffeine which can initially suppress your appetite (causing you not to eat regularly enough), resulting in low blood sugar.
4) Avoid sugar which, after initially spiking your blood sugar then causes a tremendous ‘crash’.
Hope that helps!
