Concern about chemically induced ketonic state of being over time

Coach Zoe, I’ve been (emotionally) supporting a friend who has had multiple concussions throughout his life in coming to an Amen Clinic; he has prepared for and will be going through the whole diagnostic procedure in March 2017. He recently (excitedly) told me that he has lost 32 lbs. in the last 6 weeks, feels that his “brain fog” has cleared plus has had huge gains in energy. I am concerned, as he has done all this simply through taking a packet of “KETO OS” powder from the Prüvit (mlm) company daily for the last 6 weeks.  The theory of this stuff is that it puts one into a “Ketonic” state of being within an hour which then lasts for 7 – 8 hours. I am truly concerned because I know that his brain IS in a very vulnerable state these days and the concept of a “miracle powder” that works like “magic” just doesn’t “fly” with me. I would really appreciate your looking into this product and letting me know your impression of it… if it’s the traditional sucker stuff that’s expensive but at least doesn’t harm anything, then I’m ok with it… but I am deeply concerned about possible effects on his brain, particularly just before having his analytic work set to go at the Amen Clinic. I feel this might skew both any chances he would have to get a neutral assessment of his current brain state and affect any recommendations for healing that the Amen clinic would give him.  PLEASE check this out… there is a lot of chatter on youtube about this product but the people I have actually spoken to are only capable of giving me experiential testimonials, I haven’t been able to find out much about the composition of this powder or of any lasting effects.  They say that if you stop taking the powder, the effect stops immediately, which is great for the profit side of an mlm company because people want to then _keep_ taking it, but once again, I can’t figure out what the possible effects on an unstable brain might be.

Thanks for your question. I would be very skeptical, and in fact would dismiss, any product that claims to “put you in ketosis”, which is a fat burning state produced when you eat under 40-50 g of carbohydrates per day and your body is deprived of glucose to the point of turning to fat for energy. This process usually takes several days to reach, and can indeed be quickly lost once high carbohydrate foods are reintroduced. Perhaps it is more of an energy supplement? In the brief research I did, the company did not even provide the ingredient list, so that is very concerning as well.

I empathize with your concern for your friend, but the fact that he is coming into the clinic for an evaluation will allow this to be addressed by the physician, who can explain what is best for his brain on multiple fronts, including supplementation. Until then, you can be honest in expressing your concern, but also take comfort in knowing that his appointment is quickly approaching. Best to you and your friend. -Coach Zoe

Hello Coach Zoe, thank you very much for your reply… I have forwarded it to my friend with the request that he be SURE to tell the doctor (or personnel dealing with his case history) at the Amen clinic of his 6 – 8 week daily usage of this Keto OS “magic powder” stuff. From then on it’s his call, he carries the responsibility for his own life.
I truly appreciate your willingness to check this stuff out – as one who has been following the diet suggestions of Dr. and Tana Amen since August 2016 I can say that this “old-fashioned” method also works… although I have been following this program because of my immense desire for a better functioning BRAIN (intense brain envy here…), I have also taken off about 15 Kg. (ca. 30 lbs) and am finally within 6 grams of a healthy BMI for my height and age. Without daily powders having miracle claims and ingredients that I can’t understand much about. The main ingredients are: Beta Hydroxybutyrate (Patent Pending), Erythritol, L-Taurine, Fermented L-Leucine, Natural Flavor, Malic Acid, Citric Acid, Stevia, Xanthan Gum, Caffeine‡. Dairy Free; Gluten Free.
I remember Dr. Amen saying on one of his videos that he’s not a fan of “quick fixes” having to do with weight loss because people don’t learn about better nutrition and are only focused on the end goal (at which point they start eating “stupidly” again).  That makes sense to me.
