Do you have any recommendations for those suffering from a music “ear worm”?

I am a classically trained musician. The music may change…

Thought-music:  For me, sometimes, it is a lovely symphonic background for positive, focused activity. Sometimes, it is an unwanted scrap of a song that rudely intrudes.  If I can see a connection between a word or feeling in the unwanted song and my thoughts, it then makes sense to me why it popped up “out of the blue.”  I can then move on, without it getting stuck.  Then, too, some folks say you can cure an ear-worm by singing the national anthem, slowly.  Haven’t tried that, yet.  Have you?

Anytime we get “stuck” on thoughts, or in this case music, it can help to vary our routines to introduce new patterns for our brains. Try varying something in your day when this is happening such as listening to some kind of music you don’t usually seek out, varying your route home, what foods you are eating, your exercise routine, leisure activities, etc. Do something new, or learn something new. Challenging our brains to think and react in new ways can help us from getting caught in patterns, both in the moment, and for the long term.

Zoe, unfortunately what I am talking about isn’t cured by just varying a routine. we are talking about persistent, unwelcome, very uncomfortable concerns, more like in my OCD patients that I treat. I’m pretty well schooled on ERP and CBT, just haven’t seen much on this site.
