Hello:  On Aug. 28th I asked a question about your feelings about the use of Statin drugs as it relates to our brain and it has not been answered.  Is there a reason for no answer.  I understand we need cholesterol for our brain and statins lower everything.    I would appreciate your thoughts in general terms on the effect of lower cholesterol on the brain.    Thank you-

Thanks for re-asking. If you can get to an optimal cholesterol naturally that is best. Don’t let total cholesterol drop below 160. I generally try to avoid statins if possible.

I have exercised my entire life and I eat well (not perfect) but good.  I have maintained my weight at 103 at age of 66 so the Doctor feels it’s genetic.  I don’t want to take statins because of all the other damage they can cause.   Thank you for your response I really appreciate it.  Love your programs!

Hi, I don’t have a question Dr. Amen.  I just want to let you know the day I passed by the PBS channel and listened to you it has given me so much hope.  I admire your enthusiasm, and I think your wife is beautiful, but listening to some of the battles-of-life during her past, you can not look on the outside and see what’s going on in the inside of a person.  She is a brave, determined woman and I know you are proud.  Looking forward to the my journey with you and making my brain healthy.

Hello Dr. Amen – I am hearing / reading lots of conflicting information concerning cholesterol and heart disease. Is high cholesterol indicative of heart disease or is it true that most people who have heart attacks and strokes are within the normal range of cholesterol. My doctor wants me to take statins because my total cholesterol is 324. BUT my HDL is 130!!! My triglycerides are 59, also very good. So it’s my LDL at 182 that is the concern. Any advice?

Just an FYI: I am 5’4″ and weigh 124 lb. I eat a lot of healthy fats.

Hello-  I am having the same issue with my Doctor so she ordered an Echo Cardiogram which I had and that showed no blockages whatsoever.  There is also a test called a “particle test” which will tell the cardiologist what size yourparticles are.  The size matters as the small particles are the ones that stick and block.  I am 5’1″ and 103 –

I meant to say Echo Stress Test —

Thank you for your response, jakes1. My doctor also ordered an echo. I just ordered the book Dr. Amen suggested and can’t wait to see what it has to say.

A great resource is The Great Cholesterol Myth by Steve Sinatra and Jonny Bowden.  It is true that half the people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels.  It is the quality of cholesterol that is important not the total number.
