Journaling is such a powerful experience, and can often lead us to understand parts of ourselves that only come out after consistent time with a pen or keyboard. For those not inclined to write, you might try a drawing or collage journal to express emotion or get thoughts and feelings expressed and moving into another form. It can be truly mind and spirit altering!
One of my favorite exercises is “free writing” in which you pay no attention to punctuation, form, sentence structure, grammar, etc. There is no editing. You simply write whatever comes to mind. You can literally start by writing “I don’t know what to write” and go from there. It is incredible the material that comes from our depths when we give ourselves a platform for expression. If having no starting point is too daunting or loose, you can try looking at an object and describing it. I encourage you to try it if you haven’t. We can learn so much when we stop long enough to listen to ourselves.
